YELLOWKNIFE - "Flying Objects" seen over the Fort
Providence-Resolution areas recently have not yet
been identified.
Reports of unidentified flying objects in
Providence first reached the RCMP on December
18th, although apparently an object had been soon
in the area during the previous two weeks.
Two motorists had reported seeing the object along
the Providence-Rae Road.
School principal and acting area administrator Al
Goller reported viewing it in clear, dark weather
on the night of the 18th through a 50-power
telescope,
The object is described as a reddish ball that
changes color to yellow and white and then back to
red again. Mr. Goller said it appears to have
craters or spots on the surface and to flare as it
changes direction as though gases were being
emitted.
It was seen as roughly the size of the evening
star
All witnesses said it was extremely difficult to
judge the object’s distance from the earth.
One motorist driving south to Rae said the object,
which hovered over his car, was shaped like a
stubby cigar with a rectangular "cable-like”
structure on the top.
Meteorological briefer John Panes said phenomena
such as occultations could give the illusion of
flying saucers.
The planet Venus appears red when close to the
horizon. Also, authorities are not discounting the
possibility of secret military objects.
