I was facing
east looking out of my bedroom window at
aircraft coming in to land at Vancouver
Airport, which is about 3 miles north of my
location.
A white light, looking like an aircraft
taillight appeared from behind the edge of my
neighbour's roof directly in front of me. The
time was approximately 9:05 pm.
It was travelling from north to south just
after emerging and about 2 seconds later it
turned in a wide 90 degree arc much like and
aircraft does. It began travelling towards the
west, parallel to the road which runs abut 40
feet past the south side of my house. Its
speed was comparable to that of a light plane
making a landing. After travelling
approximately 5 degrees westward, it changed
color to an orange hue while at the same time
blowing to about the speed Echo 2 travels when
as seen from the ground. It maintained this
speed throughout the rest of the sighting.
About 5 minutes into the sighting, a
commercial 4 engined jet passed slightly above
and behind the object as seen from my
position. The jet enabled me to determine the
object's height as about 500 feet.
About 10 minutes into the sighting, I left the
window to go outside and view it with my
brother, whom I called to witness it.
It crossed Orion about 5 degrees south of
Betelgeuse and began flickering like a candle
flame about to extinguish when it was almost
directly over the line joining my zenith point
with the southern horizon. It would disappear
altogether for about half a second, and
reappear again.
It continued flickering irregularly as it
passed the south side of the house and we
decided to watch It from inside, where it the
air was warmer, at a west facing window.
During this flickering, the object appeared to
move in jerks and commenced to move in a wide
arc towards the north, as it passed the south
side of the house.
It finally flickered out permanently a short
time after we started to view it from the
window. The time was approximately 9:20 P.M.
The object couldn't have been an aircraft
since there was no flashing red beacon; no
green starboard wingtip light and no red port
wingtip light.
It couldn't have been a prankster's balloon or
a railroad flare since the light shone as if
from a point source and displayed no smoke or
flame.
The change in color and slowness of its
passage was like a satellite reentry. But then
satellites don't change course when they begin
reentry and break up into many glowing
fragments before finally disappearing.
