From what I have been able to remember and from
information I got from my parents, this incident occurred in the summer of
1973. This was the summer after my first year at university when I worked
mowing lawns at Brae Glen townhouses in southwest Calgary.
At the time, we were living in St. Andrews Heights.
This is a short distance from Foothills Hospital in northwest Calgary. One
evening, my parents were driving up the hill from Parkdale to St. Andrews
Heights on 29th Street. As they were driving up the hill, my
mother saw a bright light that was coming from the east towards them. She
said it seemed to come right up close, over the car before it flew out
over Foothills Hospital to the west of them. My father confirms to me that
he also saw the light, but didn’t get a good look at it because he was
driving. My mother was absolutely convinced that it was not an airplane or
anything else she could explain. I don’t think my father has been readily
eager to dismiss the sighting as a meteor, even though he has been quite
dismissive of the idea of UFOs as alien spaceships or anything like that.
I remember that my mother was very excited about the
sighting when they got home. The next day, she called the Calgary
Planetarium to report the sighting. She was very disappointed when she
found out that there was absolutely no one at the Planetarium who had the
slightest interest in recording or investigating their sighting.
