Initial Online Report Submitted
My husband, myself and our 2 children were coming back from my mother
in law's place and we were walking on McLean Drive towards Adanac
Street when we turned up the alley and as we were getting closer to my
mother's. My husband noticed a white light just hovering over one of
the buildings on the Venables side and he asks me ''honey what is
that?" and i said ''a plane i think" but then i did a double take and
said ''no way thats not a plane". He said he figured that much already
so we stopped and just watched it. Then it started slowly moving
straight and the direction was the opposite way we were going. As it
was moving we could see the white lights going around the smallest part
on the bottom and at first we thought that was the size of it but as it
was directly above us you see this black shape moving against the the
clear blue night sky. This thing was huge! The whole time it was moving
slowly above us I was so scared that all of a sudden a beam of light
would just shoot down on us and beam us up like on that old episode of
the Simpsons, lol. Also at first we couldn't see the size of it because
it was like it was trying to camouflage itself with the sky but the sky
being clear and blue out we could notice there was a subtle
difference in the sky while it was moving and the lights weren't all
over it just at the smallest part on the bottom which kind of reminded
me of the bottom of blimp and in place of the balloon part there was
huge circular disc and there was absolutely no sound at all that was
made while it was moving.
Follow-up Investigation by Martin Jasek & Steve Adair
The family was interviewed on location on October 27, 2013. They were
asked to describe the sighting and were asked to independently make
drawings of the object that was witnessed.
The map below shows the direction of travel of the UFO in
relation to the witnesses location.
The witnesses interviewed noticed
that there was another family looking up at the object but later they
wished that they would have taken the trouble to talk to them to
corroborate their sighting. The other family was described as a man and
a woman pushing a small child in a stroller. The woman was wearing a red jacket. The entire sighting lasted about 5 minutes.
The
first drawing by the mother below was of how the UFO first appeared in
the distance towards the ESE. At this point it was just a row of lights
blinking rapidly in sequence to give the appearance of horizontal
movement or rotation. It hovered with this display for a few minutes.
Then
the object started to drift towards the family and eventually it was
almost directly overhead. It was totally silent. The row of lights was
no longer visible (presumably because they were on the edge of the
object). There was now a light in the middle but the edge of the craft
could be seen as a silhouette against a post-sunset blue sky. On location the
family members were asked to point into the sky and indicate how large
the object appeared when it was over head. They all indicted a very
large angular size, one to two feet at arms length! Therefore, the
object was either very low or very high but huge. In awe, the mother
walked slowly along with it for a few steps as it slowly drifted over
them. They eventually lost sight of it over some buildings to the
WNW.
Below is a drawing by the mother of the object when it was almost directly overhead.
The father was not wearing his prescription glasses so he was
uncertain of the UFOs exact shape. He recalled a round leading edge but
was uncertain of the trailing edge. Below is his drawing.
Below is a drawing of the UFO by the young son.
Below is a street view image of the sighting location looking towards the ESE.
There was some discrepancy regarding the exact time of the sighting.
Both the mother and father insisted the sky was still very blue and the
sun had set. The sunset time on the sighting date (Oct 23) was 6:06pm.
When the couple was interviewed on Oct 28 on location between 7:00 and
7:40 pm the sky was almost completely black but clear (stars could be
seen). On Oct 28 the sun had set at 5:57 pm (only 9 minutes earlier),
how could there be such a difference in sky colour? The woman was
certain about the time of the sighting being between 7:25 pm and 7:30 pm because she was able to examine her cell phone log. A call came in from her sister at 7:25 pm which
she didn't answer because they were busy observing the UFO. Then she
called her sister at 7:30 pm after the UFO sighting was over. Perhaps
it's possible for the sky to vary in brightness depending on cloud
cover thickness over the sunset horizon or perhaps there were some time
anomalies that are sometimes reported with UFO sightings. The family
appeared to be very honest, sincere and very excited when describing
their UFO sighting (very believable) so the time discrepancy should not
be taken as an indication that they were fabricating the account.
An attempt was made to resolve the sky colour issue on October 29. At
6:50pm the woman was asked to go outside and observe the sky to examine
its brightness. She reported that this was approximately the same
colour as on Oct 23 at 7:30 pm during the UFO sighting. On Oct 29 the
sun had set at 5:55pm (about 11 minutes earlier). Therefore, the
equivalent time on Oct 23 (for the same sky brightness) would have been
about 6:39pm. This is about 51 minutes prior to the reported sighting
time of 7:30pm. This mystery remains unresolved.
The wind direction at the Vancouver Airport was from the NNE and at 5
to 8 km/h in the evening of October 23. This was perpendicular to the
UFO travel direction indicating that the UFO was not likely a balloon.
